The woman, whose name tag read Mabel , didn't move toward the utility aisle. Instead, she leaned over a wooden crate filled with jars of hand-poured wax. "Plain light is for emergencies, dear. But a home needs a feeling ."
For the first time in months, Elias didn't reach for his phone. He didn't check his emails. He just sat in the "warm throw" of the scent, watching the light reclaim his home. He realized that while the LED bulbs provided sight, the candles provided vision .
Elias groaned, fumbling for his phone to use as a flashlight. He had no emergency kit, no flashlight with fresh batteries. He grabbed his coat and headed to the small, cluttered general store at the end of the block.
"Candles," he said to the woman behind the counter. "Just the plain ones. White. For the light."
He bought three: the Library one, a tin of Lavender & Vanilla for better sleep , and a single, thick taper for the kitchen table.
Back home, the apartment was still dark and silent. He struck a match—the sound sharp and satisfying—and lit the Library candle.
Elias looked at the "utility" candles—ten to a pack, shrink-wrapped in plastic. Then he looked at the jars Mabel was pointing to. One was labeled Cedar & Rain , another Morning Coffee .
