On the screen, a low-resolution character—a blocky, pixelated sprite—stood at the far end of the hall, right outside his bedroom door. Elias looked at his actual door. It was closed. The monitors went black

When he double-clicked it, the screen didn't flicker. Instead, his monitors—all three of them—turned a deep, bruised purple. A low-frequency hum vibrated through his desk, rattling his coffee mug. There was no main menu, no credits, just a grainy video feed of a hallway. Elias froze. The hallway was familiar. It was his own.

Elias reached for the power button on his PC, but his hand stopped mid-air. Through the thin wood of his bedroom door, he heard the distinct, digital crackle of a 16-bit footstep.

He looked back at the monitor. The sprite was gone. The camera view had shifted. It was no longer looking down the hallway; it was looking at a pixelated recreation of Elias himself, sitting at his desk, staring at a screen.
