The more the digital character ate, the more Arthur’s physical hunger grew. It wasn't a normal hunger; it was a frantic, clawing void. He ran to his fridge, shoving cold leftovers into his mouth, but they tasted like wet cardboard. He tried bread, fruit, even sugar straight from the bag. Nothing registered.

Arthur clicked. The character onscreen took a silver fork and slid it through the cake. As the metal hit the plate in the game, Arthur felt a sharp, cold sensation in his own mouth. He gasped, dropping his mouse. He could taste it—rich, dark cocoa and a hint of bitter espresso. It was the most delicious thing he had ever experienced, and yet, his stomach turned with a sudden, hollow ache. He clicked again. And again.
