In an effort to end the feud by eliminating Randall McCoy, Uncle Jim Vance leads a raid to burn down the McCoy cabin. Randall escapes, but the attack results in the deaths of two of his children, Calvin and Alifair, and the brutal beating of his wife, Sally.

Ellison "Cotton Top" Mounts, the mentally challenged son of Ellison Hatfield, is the only person executed for the murders, famously crying out that the Hatfields "hornswoggled" him with love before his death.

"Devil" Anse Hatfield eventually seeks a peaceful end, finding religion and being baptized later in life. Randall McCoy, haunted by the loss of five of his children, dies years later in a fire caused by his own cooking.

The feud officially begins to wind down with a series of high-profile legal and personal ends:
