With Johnson as the frontwoman, the group’s debut album, Mouth to Mouth , became an instant sensation. The Legacy of "Funkytown" disbanded in 1985 , the quest for that
"Funkytown" arrived at a unique cultural crossroads. It was one of the last major hits of the disco era and one of the first to truly embrace the synth-pop future.
The song spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1980.
Cynthia Johnson eventually moved on to a successful solo career and returned to her roots in gospel and jazz, but her work on "Funkytown" remains her most enduring global contribution.
