The Migos originated in Lawrenceville, Georgia, a suburb of Gwinnett County just north of Atlanta. Formed in 2008, the trio—comprising Quavo , Offset , and the late Takeoff —grew up together in the same household, raised by Quavo's mother. This familial bond, with Quavo being Takeoff's uncle and Offset's cousin, became the bedrock of their group dynamic and creative chemistry.

The name "Migos" is widely believed to be a shorthand for "Amigos," but the group has also clarified its roots in regional slang. In Gwinnett County, a "migo" referred to a hub for drug activity, often an abandoned house.
