Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Rita moved to San Francisco with her family at age six. Growing up as a first-generation American, she used films to help her family acclimate to American culture and master the English language.

She attended Lowell High School and was named the SFUSD High School Poet Laureate in 2005.
