Season 1 — Shantaram -

Based on the 2003 semi-autobiographical novel by Gregory David Roberts, Apple TV+ ’s " Shantaram " Season 1 attempts to translate a thousand-page epic of redemption and crime into a twelve-episode narrative arc. Set against the vibrant, chaotic backdrop of 1980s Bombay (now Mumbai), the series follows Dale Conti (Charlie Hunnam), an Australian fugitive who reinvented himself as "Lin Ford". While the show successfully captures the sensory overload of its setting, it struggles with the transition from the internal, philosophical tone of the book to the external demands of a television thriller.

The season centers on Lin’s dual life: his altruistic role as a makeshift doctor in the Sagar Wada slum and his growing entanglement with the local mafia led by Khader Khan. This central tension explores the classic theme of a "good man doing bad things" for survival or love. His relationship with the enigmatic Karla Saaranen provides much of the emotional weight, though critics often found their chemistry secondary to the vivid world-building. A standout element is the performance of Shubham Saraf as Prabhu, Lin's guide and friend, who brings much-needed warmth and authenticity to the screen.
