The story follows Gino (Don Ameche), a humble Chicago shoe-shiner who agrees to confess to a mob murder he didn't commit in exchange for his dream: a fishing boat in Sicily. Jerry (Joe Mantegna), a low-level mobster on probation, is assigned to "babysit" Gino for a final weekend before he goes to prison. Instead of staying in a dingy hotel, Jerry takes Gino to Lake Tahoe, where Gino’s quiet dignity leads local gangsters to mistake him for a high-ranking Mafia don.
