Place your extender roughly halfway between your router and the dead zone. If you put it in the dead zone, it won't have a strong enough signal to rebroadcast.

Many modern extenders from NETGEAR and TP-Link have "signal indicator" LEDs. A green light usually means a perfect connection back to the router, while amber or red means you need to move it closer.
